Busy, busy day, but I have time to join in "Our Beautiful World"
once again this week...this weeks word is "Eggs"
I have one photo of eggs, other then Easter, but this one is my favorite!!
At our lake home the drive is stone/gravel and one Summer when we
arrived we saw a very "distressed" bird running around in the drive.
The bird is a Killdeer.....they run kind of crazy as to distract you from their nest.
The nest that they build in the ground!!
Well, this silly bird had her nest much to our dismay, built in our drive!
We marked it with a stake so as not to drive over it...
but one night, during my sleeplessness I heard a commotion
and being so dark couldn't see a thing...
but next morning, the eggs (shells) were strewn all over
and the poor Mama bird was gone...so sad, as we had been watching the nest for days!!
So either a fox or a raccoon had a tasty meal overnight..that's nature I guess!!

TFS this, Diane. It was very interesting. I did not know birds built their nests in the ground. It seems a waste of the privilege of wings, doesn't it, not to mention a very reckless practice?! It is so sad, though.
ReplyDeleteI wrote around this time last year, I think, about watching a nest from a window. It was built in one of my hanging plants. The babies were SO adorable and growing and then one day I went to lunch and came home and they were all gone. They were not big enough to have gone on their own. No ruckus or fuss on the deck under the nest, they were just gone. I think a squirrel would have made a mess so it was probably another bird. Yup. Nature. I was heartbroken.
But they keep on going and turn around and make another nest and have more. You have to admire their tenacity and hope! Hugs, Darnell

ReplyDeleteWhen we built our house in Carmel, we had a killdeer nest on the building site. Every time we would go look at the construction, the momma would run around and hold her wing like it was broken to distract us too. I did research on them and found out that they act injured so that predators will go after them seeing they are wounded and easy prey. I thought that is pretty smart, but why are they so stupid to have their eggs on the ground! LOL The one we had at our new house also lost her eggs as well. It's a wonder they even survive as a species with egg laying like that. Hugs, Curt
ReplyDeleteThose eggs are wonderfully camoflauged, but it's sure too bad they can't find someplace better to build a nest. So sorry the mom lost her babies.
